Yes, today was the much-anticipated first day of “nursery” (aka preschool).
How do you think it went?
Very well! In fact, on the walk there, Rebekah excitedly told every stranger “I’m sooo excited- I get to go to school today! (she would crane her head to keep talking to them as we went in the opposite direction) I’m 3 1/2, I get to go to school!” Precious.
While Rebekah will normally attend nursery 5 days a week from 12:45-3:15, they start each child off slowly. Today I brought her in for a 30-minute segment- I wrongly thought I was supposed to sit in there with her, but they said, “Good-bye, Mummy!” and my daughter never noticed. I cried in the waiting room. I won’t lie. However, when I returned, she said, “No, Mommy! Leave!” (We talked about impolite that was, by the way). They said she did great and we would do the same thing tomorrow, but for an hour.
This was snack time. It is 2.50 pds a week (about $4-5), which is optional. I cannot imagine her sadness if we did not pay for a snack.
This was a dress-up/play area- on the right it is labeled “Sunnybank Pet Shop” and there are lots of stuffed animals for “sale.” So cute!
This was the crafty area, and there is an art easel to the left that R is reeeeaal excited about.
This is the reading area.
Rebekah has 2 or 3 teachers every day, and they seemed very nice- all women, praise the Lord. They have art, music, gym, reading, and play time throughout the week. The art work throughout the school is awesome and makes me smile.
Interestingly, Rebekah stands out like a sore thumb. Not only is she the only American and the only blond, she also might be the only child whose native language is English. The children seemed very sweet- the names I remember are Lambrini, Lya, Mohammed, Hosam, Nicholas, Sherwin….
Because we are so near the Uni, this particular primary school has an international reputation. Strangely enough, we fit that description!
I’ll keep you updated!
(We also visited the library for the first time this morning, but in a rare moment of restraint, I will post it separately.)

lOOKS LIKE LOTS OF FUN!! I'm sure she was beside herself with excitement. Sounds like a great way to work your way into staying the whole time. Can't wait to see some of her artwork and hear stories of her school experiences. Much love.
I loved the excitement in her voice this morning as I heard about her first day at school – we've had 2 great and lengthy for Rebekah conversations since your return which I treasure! I'm so glad she had such a wonderful first day – her response to you although rude was quite funny! I'll be glad for her sake when she can stay the whole time. I understand your tears as I have been there!
Did you see how they spelled "A bird's favorite snacks?"
One day you will have to correct her spelling
Looks so wonderful and fun! I love international exposure! That is awesome!
I'm so excited for her! And of course for you as you watch your little bird grow and learn. You will be full of joy when you send her I bet…God gives us such a sweetness when they are happy, doesn't He?
No judgment here about crying as she went in. Good Lord it is hard for me sending him in when I'm familiar with things so adding a different culture and different languages would be scary. She sounds like she took it all in stride and will surely have the best time her little heart can take!
Love the pictures!
I think it's a good sign they are ready for school when they can't wait to go and don't want to leave. Congratulations on a fun first day. Just wait till she gets "homework" – I'm sure she'll come up with some soon and be thrilled. Such a smart girl and this will be a great fit for her!
she is so cute. love the outfit!
Her excitement is palpable! So sweet. She is smart just like her mom and dad and will no doubt do fabulously. Be glad her response to your return is one that shows she loves where she is and what she is doing. Can you blame her. She knows academics/study/school is a good thing.
Can't wait to continue reading the stories about her life in school. Love you!
Yeah for Rebekah! She is in the same class Hannah was in while we were there. Go Bluebirds!!!
Who is her teacher? I know she will just love it there. Watch out for the start of "Scottish speak" over the next weeks (:
Missing you guys.
