What Do I Do?
Let’s see, I cook and clean up, I pull out toys and put them back up again, I scrub toilets, tubs, and teeth, I clean up some more, I run up and down the stairs, I answer “Mommy!” 1300 times a day, I wipe hands, noses, and bottoms more times than I care to admit, I teach good manners, proper etiquette, how to be a hostess/host, I partner with Josh to teach the gospel and how to live it out daily, I clean up some more…did I mention I clean up some more?
{…ahem…}
Oh. You mean, what do I do for money? Oh, yes, I see. That is an altogether different answer now, isn’t it? :) I am actually really blessed to have a fabulous job I never would have imagined. For review, I studied English and Spanish at Texas A&M and was certified to teach either or both at a secondary level (pre-teens & teenagers). I ended up teaching high school Spanish for 5 years before we were blessed with Rebekah. Before we ever had kids, Josh and I committed to me being able to stay at home because it’s what we both wanted. So, we weren’t able to proceed with children until he was out of seminary and employed full-time once again. We had Rebes and Luke, and then found ourselves seriously plotting a move to Scotland, where neither of us would work. Hmmm….how was that going to work? Well, the Lord has some seriously amazing skills and one of them is providing. People at out home church approached Josh about supporting our journey over here- after all, Josh would hopefully end up teaching future ministers and preachers of the Word of God- why not invest in that? We were humbled and blesses beyond measure. Josh is excellent at budgeting and saving, so we coupled our savings and that money and headed over.
SPS & EME
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, a friend contacted me to write for an online learning company. I wrote study sheets and edited other people’s work, and then I wrote actual curriculum. I think I was really good at parts of that job and not so good at other parts. They must have agreed because I was essentially laid off. As much as I felt relieved with the extra time I had again, I was shocked at how devastated I felt and how much I wanted to help out with out finances. My mom mentioned my situation to a mutual friend (looong story!) and he said he needed writers, but wasn’t sure if I would be interested. That was August of 2009. A year and a half later, I am still working for him in a variety of ways. What a blessing! It’s a whole lot less stress and still lets me be creative and have a foot in the online world.
Basically, I write posts for blogs about certain sound masking products and ergonomic products. I started just working for the sound masking company, Speech Privacy Systems. It was such a natural fit because my friend’s father-in-law owns the company and they are highly ethical and honest. Plus, I LOVE white noise. maybe I’ve mentioned that before…? ;) Once I had a foot in the door there, they asked me to edit some product descriptions for their ergonomics company, Ergonomics Made Easy. In all honesty, I knew nothing about the ergo world except that it seemed intimidating. However, through my editing, I learned a lot about ergonomic principles and even began to apply them to my own desk and computer use.
That said, I can not recommend these companies any more highly- they are believers in Christ and as such seek to glorify Him in all they do. Part of that has been an incredible work relationship where I have been supported in every way and sweetly encouraged to grow as a blogger, even on this site. They helped me switch over to The Adventures of Miss Mommy and have been wonderful partners in and through all the change and excitement.
So, thank you, SPS & EME. I am forever indebted {and forever blogging}.
