Dad the builder

I stole these pictures from my parents’ blog because I am so impressed with my dad!  He can build/make anything!  Recently my dad dug for a pond in their backyard.  I’m not really sure why it mattered, but he found to his surprise that there had previously been a pool.  Evidently this little find changed the scope of this particular project in that he “had” to make the pond bigger.  I am sure he was disappointed.  Anyway, check out these before and after pictures of their incredible pond!

Before Pics

The view out the French doors off the sun room
Same basic view, just a better shot of the angle (more to the right)
This is directly outside our bedroom, off the patio.

Digging the Pond

Yes, this is quite enormous…
Fortunately, Bill had an eager helper in Riley Jane.
Couldn’t resist posting her in her “work” clothes.
Everybody needs a little break time…
Again,very helpful.

The pond

While we’re at it, I’m going to steal another post.  We moved to Iowa City 5 weeks before we had Rebekah.  I LOVED our house, but the yard needed a lot of work.  My dad built our window boxes from scratch and even built a stone patio out back.  Josh ended up doing an incredible make-over on our yard. {It was the first time we made a yard better rather than unwittingly let it die.}  We had some beautiful wild flowers out front and I gave some to my dad.  He planted them at their new house as a surprise for me!

Our house- you can see ourflowers, too!
Dad loved “Twinkie”!!
So did my mom!
Rebekah has always been long and skinny!

The window boxes & stone patio

Dad built these boxes from scratch and planted the flowers.
Dad also carefully laid out all these stones to make this patio.  You can see why Josh needed to level the yard and plant grass!
Our house after Josh worked on the front yard, too!

Emily’s Cone Flowers

As a surprise to Emily, we just sent her these pictures of the cone flowers we took from her front bed and planted at our old house.  Bill was able to replant them (again!) at our new house!!

A few cone flowers…
A whole bunch of them!

Dad, you really are amazing!

Duthie Park and Winter Gardens

Yesterday dawned beautiful and sunny, and we couldn’t stay indoors- the kids and I decided to hit Duthie Park.  We’ve been there lots of times before (great pics on that link by the way), the first time during Malone Family Fun Week last February but I am still amazed at the joy it brings me/us.  Not only are there 2 parks to play at, there are also the Winter Gardens.  I think I finally put my finger on part of why I love the gardens- they remind me of my dad.  He loves flowers, ponds, and fish.  These gardens are so well-cultivated and neatly organized-  I always think about how much he’d love it all and how he’d probably learn to drive if only to get to the gardens every day.  Love you, Dad!

Anyway, today was no surprise- great morning!  We played and slid and visited the gardens and ate suckers.  Luke especially loved the ponds and the fish (“fis!”).  He also loved throwing pence into the water, though was unsure as to whether the coins had to stay in the wa-wa.

I bought these sweet flowers at he store for 3 pounds total.

I planted 2 outside and 1 has to be inside- no pic yet.
