TILT: Luke

Luke Duke

Luke is just over 2 now and more delightful than ever!  Walking and now talking{!} have made him much more confident of himself and his ability to fend for himself.  He is such a fun-loving little guy and still very dramatic.  Gotta love him.  Anyway, mostly for the sake of stateside family and friends, I thought I’d do a little update on Luke Duke and what he’s saying and doing these days:

  • Luke pretends almost as much as Rebekah, and his favorite game is throwing us a tea party in the bathtub by asking with a cheeky grin, “Mommy?  Unt sum?  Mommy tea?  Hot!”
  • Similarly, he {and Beks} like to pretend I’m a baby and insist I cry.  Then, they bring me a bottle and burp me by pounding on my back while giggling like crazy.
  • Luke is very, very polite.  He thanks us for everything including diaper changes and baths.
  • Luke loves to point out every thing he knows and is not satisfied until you have affirmed his keen observation.  His favorite objects are: airplanes, dogs, kitties, helicopters, birds, birds flying, tea, hot tea, Mommy’s drink, people in pictures, balls, balloons, etc.
  • He is starting to complete a lot of phrases/sentences.  In fact, on the airplane home from London, he dropped some precious trinket and worriedly said, “I can’t get it.”  I’m not kidding.  {How many times have I told him this in the car when I’m driving?!}
  • My new favorite story- while we were in London last weekend, Rebekah and Luke shared a room.  She was on a futon and he was zipped up in his happy tent.  At 5:55am, they came tripping in our room.  Sleepily, I asked how Luke got up?  Bekah said, “I just asked, ‘Hey, Buddy?  You wanna get up?’ and he said, ‘Yea!’”  So, as we were still trying to convince them that while the British sun was in fact up, it was confused and should be asleep, too, Luke started to give me 5′s.  Then, he missed my hand intentionally and said, “Too show!” {=too slow!}  I laughed out loud for 2 minutes, I think.  If he’s gonna wake me before 6am, then that’s the way to do it.
  • Yesterday he wanted some yogurt.  I had already put his uneaten container away in the fridge and I had left the spoon in it.  While I was getting it back out, he mumbled to himself, “Get shpoon” as he tottered over to the silverware drawer and plucked a spoon with one hand while deftly closing the drawer with the other.  When he saw the original spoon still in the container, he said, “Put back” and reversed the process.  I was shocked.  This is a huge milestone for us.
  • A few days ago in Asda, he told the lady at the till, “I’m 2!”  I’ve been surprised at his accurate use of “I.”
  • I call him our little parrot because he repeats everything he hears.
  • Josh and I are tickled by how funny Luke is.  Rebekah was so serious for so long and never really laughed until well after 1.  Luke giggled at 3 months and has been pretty amusing since.  He has a fun sense of humor and seems to draw on physical humor a lot.  he must get that from his Aunt Kate.
  • A recent development has been hiding in shame.  If he feels embarrassed, there’s a good chance he’ll lay down on the ground and not look at you.  I try really hard to keep a straight face.
  • He also has learned “ouchie” and that you get kisses for them.  He’s a fan, of course.
  • Luke is starting to eat a bit more variety {tho Nana and Papa didn’t really get to see this!}.  He eats chicken nuggets, hotdogs, most fruits, yogurt, raw carrot, egg whites from time to time, toast, and pancakes, though french fries and anything sweet are petitioned for daily {multiple times per day, in fact}.

And, now, for some pictures from the last week {all from our trip to London}:

Wow- airplane!

Look! Another one!

Last Day of London

Last Day of London

We did most of our sightseeing Friday and Saturday, so Sunday we attended Kyle and Karen’s church, All Souls.  It was my first Anglican experience- pretty cool to try something new!  Anyway, I was impressed with the creche and even when we walked in, Luke smiled and said, “creche!”  {side note: I have been noticing that the past few Sundays have been remarkably easier on Luke’s drop-off.}  So, we did the church thing {way to go, Josh, for leading our family  to worship even on vacation…I’ll tell ya, it’s sadly not my first instinct.}  Anyway, we ate a great little cafe afterwards and went back to the flat so Luke could nap- poor little guy was exhausted and sooo happy for a cozy nap.  Phyllis, Rebekah, and I finished our shopping, and then we met Kyle and Karen for dinner at Pizza Metro.  They were nice enough to walk us to a great park, where the kids ran off their last bit of steam before going to bed {we had to get up between 3 and 4 the next morning to catch our flight}.  This is not that exciting a post, I know, but I felt remiss not to finish our trip, and the picture of Luke and Josh is one of my new favorites.

London Day 2

Buckingham Palace

On Saturday, we hit Buckingham Palace, the National Gallery, and Notting Hill.  Luke randomly fell asleep at 11 in his stroller sans wash cloth and paci, so we were able to stay out and enjoy another full day!  This is the first time in 4 years, we have been able to keep both kids out all day, without factoring in nap schedules.  {Incidentally, this flight was the first time in 4 years, I haven’t had a child on my lap most of the flight…maybe I’ve mentioned that before.}  Anyway, it was another very pleasant and warm day, and we loved touring around.  I think a really fun part of the day was when we split up for lunch.  Josh and his mom had a hankering for Pho and Vietnamese food, while Mike, Rebekah, and I thought pizza sounded good.  {Plus, I had a coupon burning a hole in my pocket.}  So, since Luke was asleep and is on a hunger strike anyway, we sent him with the Vietnamese crew, and Mike and I took Beks with us.  As is her custom, Rebekah told everyone she was 4.  As a result, the waiter brought me a note telling me they had a surprise for her.  She was indeed surprised {and thrilled} with her chocolate cake and bambinocinno {baby cappucino}.  By this point, the rest of the fam had joined us and we all got to enjoy the sweets.  I was highly impressed with Pizza Express and their treatment of Rebekah!  Interestingly, a similar thing happened at a shoe store {Ecco} we were browsing.  Rebekah told them she was 4, and they gave her a pink pencil bag.  When they saw Luke, they found a blue one for him.  So stunned by this kind of customer service!

Wicked!!!!!!!!

That night, Josh and I went to Wicked and before that a great dinner at Kazan, a Turkish restaurant that offers a fab pre-theatre menu.  We LOVED it.   This was by far one of my favorite dates ever!  I was on the edge of my seat the entire show and had one of the best dinners in a long, long time.

TILT: Cupcake!

cupcake…fun and wellbeing for families

And, yes, I did mean Cupcake…singular…though I also love cupcakes, too!  Anyway, as you know, this past weekend, Josh, his parents, the kids, and I hopped a cheap flight to London and stayed at Kyle and Karen’s flat.  Karen is the founder of Cupcake {read here for the story of cupcake}, which was voted UK’s best pregnancy spa last year!  Although Cupcake is a fairly new endeavour, you’d never know it.  Cupcake caters to pregnant women and mums of young children.  The club takes you from pregnancy to baby’s early childhood in style and comfort.  The ambience is just lovely.  There’s something about deep purples and pinks with ornate, elegant decor and fine china that makes you feel pampered from the moment you step in the door.  By the time your child is well-cared for in the creche and you’re enjoying a massage or facial, you might as well be in heaven… {well, heaven on earth.  I imagine heaven is substantially more Christ-centric}.

Head in the Clouds

Karen treated Phyllis and me to “Head in the Clouds,” a 25-minute head and neck massage.  Our heads were indeed in the clouds as we relaxed in a darkened room on a water massage table.  I can only imagine how much a preggers me would enjoy that massage as my back and belly got cosy on that water bed.

We also enjoyed a hot cup of tea and a gourmet cupcake in a quiet corner.  I perused the menu and would have loved to order Chicken Noodle Stir-Fry for lunch one day.  I also noticed that a club member can host a baby shower or birthday party at Cupcake and enjoy use of the china and space without all the hassle of throwing a good shin-dig in your own place.  Imagine how lovely Rebekah’s Cupcake Par-Tea could have been at Cupcake?!

I was impressed with the classes offered for both mums and dads, as well as the children.  There is a creche available, but there are also great classes for you and baby, including Tin Pan Annie, a class Rebekah, Luke, and I would attend due to my kids’ love for live, interactive music!  I also was intrigued with the mumpreneur classes offered to mums, such as how to price your services and goods.  If I were contemplating starting a business, I would love having a successful entrepeneur share her tips with me.

Unfortunately, I am an Aberdonian at present, so I will only be able to enjoy Cupcake as a visitor, but I highly recommend it to you lucky Londoners.

Us with Kyle & Karen

Sit down for a cuppa!

There's lots to choose from!

Who wouldn't love dining on fine china?

In a lovely and relaxing environment...

Evidently I am not alone in my enjoyment of these things.

Maybe because there's a fabulous creche...

Or a sleep chair...

Or ornate decor...

And another fun play area...

LONDON!

London!

Josh’s parents  took us to London last week!  We flew out of Aberdeen on Thursday morning and took an hour-long bus into London itself, where we caught a train at Victoria Station to Clapham Junction.  It was an 8-minute walk to Josh’s cousin’s flat where we stayed.  Kyle (Josh’scousin) and Karen stayed with friends and gave us the run of their 2-BR flat in Clapham.  It was wonderful!  Rebekah and Luke shared the guest room, Mike and Phyllis had the master, and we stayed on a pull-out in the living room.  Plus, the kitchen was huge and had a private patio where we really enjoyed our morning tea and airplane sightings.

The kids did marvellously well!  They were flexible and easy 99% of the time.  Traveling with them is getting much easier and less stressful.  It was the first flight in 4 years {and there have been a lot of flights in those 4 years!} I did not have a child on my lap!  Okay, Luke came to visit a few times, but he was largely enamored with his big boy seat everywhere (the plane, the buses, the trains, and the taxi).  He is really a little boy these days, pointing out every moving object by name and calling them the wrong colors {he favors orange, bwue, and purple}.  The first night was rough in that he slept from 10:30pm-3:30am and that’s about it.  Evidently, I did not make the tent to his liking, which I remedied the next day.  The rest of the trip was uneventful sleep-wise  except how well they both both functioned, esp Luke who took short stroller-naps without complaint.  I was so proud of him for being such a trooper!

As for London, well, it was wonderful, of course!  I loved the whole trip, every minute. So, I’ll start with Thursday afternoon and Friday.  When we arrived, we dropped the men and kids off at the flat for them to rest while Phyllis and I were treated to massages at Cupcake!  {More on that tomorrow!}  Then, we strolled through the area we were staying in, Clapham, which has been dubbed “Nappy Valley”  {nappy=diaper} due to it having such a high birth rate.  This little tidbit explains the incredible shopping, though.  I was delighted and got most of my Christmas shopping done and within budget!

On Friday, we took the Big Bus Tour, which I highly recommend.  It takes you through most of the famous sights and even shopping of London with a live tour guide.  You can hop on and off as you like all day.  We stayed on for most of the tour, hopping off for lunch and a boat tour of the River Thames which was included in the tour ticket.
