TILT: Jewelry Organization

I HEART jewelry

This time next week I will be hosting a give-away for one of my all-time favorite products….get excited!  Until then, I thought I’d share another love of mine: organization.  I’m not so much of a 409 cleaner, but more of a everything has its place cleaner.  If things look organized, I feel pretty good about life in general.  Since having 2 kids and losing all sight of feeling organized, we have also moved to the UK and lost much square footage while simultaneously adding to our toy collection.  Not a great combination.  Oh, and we don’t have real full-time jobs, so going out and buying awesome shelves and organizational tools is not exactly an option.  So, re-purposing containers and spaces has become my new hobby.  :)

My most recent frustration was my jewelry.  You need to know that I have always been a jewelry girl.  I actually don;t have a ton of “nice” jewelry, nor do I really care about diamonds, etc.  Crazy, I know.  Maybe it’s because I love BIG earrings and we will never, ever, ever have the cash flow to buy a pair of diamonds that would suit my preferences (and if we ever do have that kind of money and choose to spend it on jewelry, you have my permission to punch me).  Anyway, I love big, colorful, funky jewelry and one of the best jobs I had was selling jewelry while Josh was in seminary.  I didn’t have to fake it- I really loved the whole thing!  Well, when we moved overseas, I had to part with quite a bit of my bobbles.  We simply couldn’t afford the weight of the jewelry as part of our baggage…so sad.  I chose a few (maybe a lot to most of you) of my favorites and I have also found some great deals here to the point that I had quite a collection again….I was tempted to buy a jewelry box and decided it wasn’t a good use of money (especially since I have a beautiful one in storage in TX).  Yet, all the pieces were constantly tangled to the point that I wasn’t wearing most of it and just kind of sighed every time I saw the knotted mess.

Before- such a nightmare!

We have this funny wardrobe in our room with a random rack in a tiny shelving area.  Hmmm…I detangled and hung all the necklaces on the useless rack…and then sorted out the rest.

I chose not to color-graduate my necklaces because they stand out more to me when all mixed up.

Smaller earrings organized by color

Big earrings and bracelets, etc.

I am quite pleased with how it all worked out- plus I only used what I already had!

Things I Love Thursday: Easy Ways to Go Green {Give-Away!}

I am the Going Green Guru

{imagine Robert Downey Jr and an overly arrogant smirk on my face}

As part of weaning myself from Coke Zero, I also felt a the tiniest compulsion to be a better steward.  There is something about living abroad in a smaller world that challenges my usual way of thinking.  I posted last summer about our recent commitment to recycling and our newer venture into composting.  {I was still pretty bitter about having to compost…}  Well, we are still recycling, though substantially less plastic as I am not guzzling 6 litres of Coke Zero a week.  But, just like when we were staying in Banchory, our rubbish lorry only comes fortnightly now {read that- our trash truck comes every 2 weeks}.  So, we were compelled to compost again.  This time, though, I am really loving it!  The city council supplied this cool compost bin, and I keep it under my sink.  You put anything that’s food in it {uneaten food on plates, trimmings, peelings, meat, bones, and even tea bags!}

Compost bin

Under the sink, with a lock on the handle.

So, I take the compost out to a special rubbish bin we have and a different rubbish lorry picks it up, also on a fortnightly basis.  And, due to its design, I only have to empty the green bin once it’s full {versus every day}.  I have been shocked how much less rubbish we collect, and I feel like I’m being a better steward.

…Which brings me to my next point.  There’s something about scraping food off your plates and intentionally collecting it in a special box under your sink that breaks you down.   All of a sudden, you are open to considering a whole new world of going green.

Shocking what's recyclable!

Recycle bags.

So, what started as a measure to get around an overflowing trash can morphed into an introspective questioning of self.  I realized that I wanted to be a better steward…not just of my own body, but also of God’s creation.  I find myself all of a sudden caring about…stuff and what’s in it and where it’s going.  I recycle.  I compost.  Sometimes, I even buy stuff that’s organic…I’m practically a Going Green Guru, right?  Well, obviously not, but I am experimenting with a few things and am finding going green is not as daunting as I originally suspected.

Easy ways to go green

  • Shut off lights when not in use.
  • If you’re in the UK, turn off the switches themselves, too, when not in use.
  • Recycle.
  • Reuse printed paper for crafts/lists.  Josh prints out a ton of papers for me to edit and I keep them (and any google maps, etc) for the kids to color on or for me to make grocery lists on.
  • Compost- call 0845 608 0919 for a green box
  • Use a “green” power strip- you can set a master socket that automatically turns off all the other sockets (TV, DVD player, Play Station or Computer, scanner, printer, etc.)
  • Walk when you can.
  • Turn off fans/heaters when not in use
  • Use windows well- open the windows for ventilation in the summer, and open the blinds for extra heat in the winter.  Instead of turning on the heat, layer when cold.  We sleep the kids in 2 sets of pajamas and under blankets in the winter because we can’t afford to keep the heat on all day and night.  I also use 2-piece pj’s as long johns for them.
  • Line dry clothes when possible.

Thanks to Shadley for these extra tips left in the comments!

  • Buy Local (saves transportation fuel and emissions)
  • Eat fresh foods (Farmer’s Market)
  • Eat vegetarian a couple times a week (livestock are heavy on the carbon footprint)
  • Cloth diaper, even part-time!
  • Stop buying napkins and paper towels and use cloth, or by 100% recycled paper items

A few more from Sarah:

  • I’d say buy meat/eggs direct from farmers. We’ve get our meat from a farmer here in Iowa that slaughters in field and then has them sent to the abattoir for processing. I love meat and would have a hard time going full vegetarian {not to mention Jonathan wouldn’t last two days without it!}. But, I make a strong effort to eat humanely raised/humanely killed animals.

Green Power Strip Give-Away!!!

The folks at Ergonomics Made Easy are super-generous and are offering one of my readers a green power strip!  {It is for US plugs, but if you’re a UK friend you could give it away or save it for when you return!  Ergonomics Made Easy will mail it to a US address.}

This new product “goes green” by using a master socket that controls the other outlets on the The Energy Saver Green Power Strip. Meaning when the device such as a TV is plugged into the master socket is turned on, the other sockets with your cable box, DVD player, and sound system will then be powered on. The reverse happens when you power down your TV turning off the power to the other sockets. This saves you on electricity and therefore money.

Green Power Strip

To enter- you have until Sunday night!

  1. Leave a comment= 1 entry!
  2. FB/Tweet about the give-away, linking to this post=2 entries!!
  3. Blog it, linking to the green power strip AND this post in your post=3 entries!!!

Do you have any suggestions for easing into greener, more organic living???  I’d love to hear them!

Satrosphere {Dinosaur Exhibit}

I love themes…this one is pretty obvious.

Little Scientists Day

Christy, ever on top of fun things to do with kids, sent out an email about the upcoming discounted Little Scientists Day at the Satrosphere.  Kids under 3 would be free and adults were cheaper.  As it turned out, she, Kate, Andrea (a new friend from the US!), and I were drawn in to the discounted fun!!  Luke was decked out head to toe in dinosaurs- his dino tee-shirt, sweatshirt, and overalls- all from Nana! and both kids took a favorite dinosaur with them in the car.  Rebekah also brought dino stickers (from Aunt Sarah) for each of her friends.  I LOVE how she plans to share like this.  I was surprised just how much fun my kids had the whole time!  I think all kids come with a 6th sense for play areas (similar to mine for Sonic)…all of them zoomed right over to play…right past the dinosaurs!  Oh well.  They played and snacked, and then we moved on to the dinos.  The exhibit was great!

Things I liked about the Satrosphere:

  • Upon entering, there is a table set up for coloring in the gift shop.
  • There are very reasonably priced gifts in the shop.
  • They have a great soft play area.
  • The snack area is clean, has high chairs, and offers reasonably priced snacks, such as cakes and cookies.  {I personally enjoyed a cherry scone for 1 GBP!}
  • The dino exhibit was great!
  • They had several interactive parts, such as bingo for dinos and a mouse-powered dino.
  • They had several story times that were dino-themed and culminated in a craft.
  • They offer discounts online and have special Little Scientists Days like the one we enjoyed!
  • Even though the exhibits change, they always have hands-on, interactive activities for curious minds and hands.

{p.s.  The next Little Scientists Days are June 10th, 14th, & 15th…}

On our way- dinosaurs in hand!

Things I Love Thursday: Stain Devils

Dr. Beckmann

When my mom visited in April, she came bearing many gifts, including new wardrobes for the little ones, lots of American food for my pantry, and 7 shirts from  GAP {for me!}…it was AWESOME.  Unfortunately, she unwrapped the Crisco I requested and through less than gentle handling, the greasy shortening got all over my brand-new purple sweatshirt!  I was very sad…I knew it wouldn’t come out- butter or grease stains never come out, they just leave discolored spots all over.  Sigh.  Alas, I spot-treated the stains a billion times to no avail.

On a whim, my mom bought me Dr. Beckmann’s Stain Devils for cooking oil and fats.  Lo and behold, with one application, the spots were out!  As an added bonus, these stain devils have a variety of applications, such as for ink or curry sauces {love the curry application for the UK}.  Plus, they’re small and only 1 GBP, which is a nice, affordable, and easy to store option.

Just a heads-up, y’all!

Things I Love Thurday: The making of an outfit

The making of an outfit

I really like fashion and being trendy, but feel that with turning 30 and 2 children who changed my body just enough to notice, I had kind of given up.  I’ve never been a jeans and tee-shirt kind of girl, but I rarely let myself have just have fun with an outfit.

Well, my new friend, Joy, has inspired me to dress with more purpose.  Joy wears skirts and dresses most of the time and has a lovely style.  She buys high-quality clothing, not tons of it, but pieces she loves and that will last through trends and seasons.  I really like the effort she makes to be feminine (it’s not for all of us, don’t get your feathers ruffled, ladies), modest, and true to herself.

So, this last Saturday, I went to a baby shower and donned a kind of crazy outfit I ended up loving.  I wore a dress I never would have imagined buying- I passed it one day in ATL (Ann Taylor Loft to the uninitiated) a year after having Rebekah.  It was strapless and had stripes.  I joked with the sales girl how you had to have a flat tummy to pull it off.  She convinced me to give it a go, and I was shocked how cute it was- imperfections and all.  I bought it and wore it on Josh’s and my first night away together after I weaned  Rebekah.  I felt very flirty and cute in it.  However, most of the time, I wear it with a jean jacket and cute wedge heels.

Problem: You might recall we live in Scotland- bare, pale legs are no match for UK weather or style, so I knew I would have to do something inspired to pull off the tall brown suede boots I would end up wearing.  As I pushed through my tights drawer, my eyes landed on some gems of leg ware.  Bright. Blue. Sheer. Tights.  I was sold.  All in all, I loved my outfit and even got some compliments, which made the 30 minutes of walking in wedge boots worth the pain.  Fashion hurts- but it’s worth it.

The outfit

Somehow I managed to dodge all formal photog sessions, and this bad boy is the only evidence I have of said outfit.  Ignore my good friend’s darling baby out of a J Crew ad, and focus on the tights on the girl in the background.

You would think these tights would inspire more photographs to be taken.

I was proud of my extroverted self taking a back seat.  It was about time, even if I did miss out on being in pictures {I wouldn’t say I “missed” them}.
