Teaching Spanish to Toddlers & Preschoolers {Lesson 9}

Make sure you check out my Spanish Page for the previous lessons and songs.

español escosés {Scottish Spanish}

I offered to teach Spanish to the toddlers and preschoolers in our play group every Monday at 11am.  I thought I’d share my lesson plans, tweaks, and vocabulary for anyone interested, as well as for the moms to review their kids for the next week. *Each week, we are learning part of the alphabet, a new color, or numbers, as well as various phrases or terms (maybe 4-6 phrases or terms a time).  Most lessons will be based on toys or other tactile objects and I will incorporate or just add a story in Spanish and/or Bible story.  I ordered several bilingual books online and my mom sent me some, too!  I also ordered a children’s Bible in Spanish.

Objetivos:

  • Practice alphabet and look at the letters
  • Review #s (1-10) & Counting
  • Review asking and telling age
  • Learn how to ask and answer “What is your name?”
  • Read story
  • Sing Colores (review rojo, verde, azul, morado, amarillo, blanco, marrón, negro, add anaranjado)

Métodos:

  1. Use this number song to practice numbers.
  2. Say alphabet chant a couple times while pointing out the letters for recognition.
  3. Teach a vowel rhyme that incorporates “¿Cómo te llamas?” Repeat until everyone has it (I omitted the 2nd line for simplicity’s sake).  Then, point out the vowels from the alphabet, as well as the question and answer (though they are in reverse order).  Practicing asking and answering.  Repeat phrases for practice.
  4. Sing Colores song.  Rachel leads and reviews colors, then  adds next color: gris.
  5. Practice action verb commands by calling out the 4 commands and having the kids do them all.  If there’s time, have the kids take turns calling them out too.

Vocabulario

  • “¿Cómo te llamas?”- What’s your name?  (literally, How do you call yourself?)
  • “Me llamo ____.”- I am _____. (literally, I call myself ____.)
  • gris- gray
  • ratón- mouse

Tip: To pronounce the vowels, take a look at these hints…(you can also review the alphabet chant)

a- ah

e- eh

i- eeee

o- oh

u- ew

For practice, make sure to ask the questions to your children frequently, but not in a threatening way.  Maybe do it as you are standing in line or are driving somewhere.  By going over them a few times, you will help keep them fresh in your children’s minds as they try to sort out what they mean and how to respond.
