TILT: Not Fighting over What Rebekah Will Wear!

Wardrobe Issues

Rebekah is a girl and she is 4, so you know what that means: wardrobe battles.  I usually win, but I hate the battle.  She always wants to wear a dress, and while that is fun, she can’t wear dresses everyday for a number of reasons, none of which I feel like explaining right now.  ;)  Anywho, for a while we let Rebekah pick what she wanted to wear when she had dry pull-ups at night…well, we had a wet spell and the dresses were just sitting in her closet, looking sad and forlorn, wishing to be worn with a little girl wishing just as hard to wear them.  So, I chunked that plan and let her wear  dresses since it’s “summer” or at least warmer than 50 degrees.  However, we returned to the battle stage and I hate starting the day with bad attitudes.  So, I adopted the closet organizer plan from our own Jill at Diaper Diaries and love it!

Closet Organizer

Basically, what you do is get a 6-pocket organizer and YOU (the parent) choose 6 complete outfits, from hair accessories to socks, and put them in the pockets.  each morning, your daughter can choose any one of the pockets and wear its contents.  Since there aren’t 7 pockets and you think in weeks, you can just give her a freebie on Saturday or something.  Beks doesn’t really think in terms of weeks and our organizer, while pink, is second-hand and had 5 pockets, so she wears the 5 outfits and then we refill.  I get to lay out the options, and she gets to choose.  Win-win.

Closet organizer

I got a little motivated and organized my closets too, which included my sweaters.  I found that I favor GAP and Ann Taylor Loft, with 13 sweaters from GAP and a good number from ATL.  I don’t think I realized how many I had!  It’s a good thing since the cold is already blowing in.

A little closet organizer for myself

What a great idea! My girl is only 20 months, but she definitely has her opinions. I hope I remember this when she is four! :) Thanks!

Love this idea! How creative and easy–then she gets to choose and feel like she can wear something she “helped” pick out. I’m like you–I don’t let Charlie choose, (it’s mainly just shoes so far…usually a pair of pink jellies that she can’t wear to church or school since the bark at the playground hurts her feet and/or she falls easily wearing them…and they were like $3.99) unless I pick two options that work for me and then let her pick between those two. It’s AMAZING how they care even at this age. Ty still couldn’t care less what he wears. Shoes, clothes, whatever. Never comments, never notices. Charlie: “Mommy I don’t wike dat shirt I want pink. I want dos pink shoes. Okay.” Me: “Well you can’t wear your pink shoes because you fall down PLUS you’re gonna wear what Mommy puts on you since you’re not in charge.” Charlie: “Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I want pink Mommy I want pink!” Sadly I’ve actually started buying more and more pink since that’s the color she always wants to wear. I guess technically that’s letting her wear what she wants?? Hmmm. I suppose I’m giving in :)

Great idea! I’m sure it is much less hassle in the mornings when she has some choice in the clothing decision. All matched and ready to go!! Good for you.

great idea for the shoes in the basket! BigGirl’s shoes are in a jumbled pile on the floor in her closet and no matter how many times i get in there and line them up neatly in pairs they *somehow* manage to get jumbled again. i’m putting a laundry basket up there TODAY. thanks for the tip! i love it!

Great idea – your sweater wardrobe has benefited from Sarah, Phyllis and myself this year that I know of! You are loved by many Miss Emily!

Now if I could just get Doodles to put on her “britches.” She keeps asking me (sometimes while crying) “Why do I have to put on britches? Why doesn’t Ibbie have to wear britches to the grocery store?” That’s cause we’re just a little bit redneck.

  7. This is one of the most sanity saving things I have ever done. Seriously!!

Great idea! Yes, giving our kids “choices” is always more pleasing to them! :) Can’t wait to see you in December Em!!! oxoxo Dee
